My First Month in LA: Foodie Edition

I’m homesick y’all, and it just hit me today September 8th. It’s my first month in LA and I’m already homesick. What part of the game is this?

Let me start by thanking God that I was finally able to move into my apartment after waiting a month. Amen! I absolutely love my new apartment. The location is central to everything, I can get to a Target, Walmart, Tj Maxx or an Ikea with in 15-20 mins. Bingo!

Within my first month of living in LA, I was able to stay with a cousin in Laguna and really explore that whole area and all of its wonderful shopping. Outside of shopping I’m also a foodie! Laguna didn’t have the best food but I did come across one restaurant called The Melt. I would call them a “grilled cheese spot” that would be the simplest description of them.

I went twice and had two damn good sandwiches. One was called the “Mac Daddy” it had Mac and Cheese, smoked bacon and crispy onions. My second visit I got the “Steak and Cheese” their version of a Philly cheesesteak. Heaven in mouth!

Once I moved into my place I was able to check out some new and old restaurants in my area. One old restaurant that I have already been to was Salsa and Beer. Probably one of my all time favorite Mexican restaurants so far. Best meal on the menu… The California Burrito. Succulent shrimp, steak and chicken. Definitely enough food to have leftovers for lunch the next day. If you’re ever in town make sure you check them out!

A new restaurant that I checked out was a Vegan restaurant called Doomie’s. They have Big Mac’s and Fried Chicken. I know its hard to believe its  Vegan but it is. Check out their menu and my meal below.

Last but not least, my favorite hot dog spot… Dog Haus! Some of the most tasty Hot Dogs and sausages I’ve ever had in my life. Below is the “Thai Fighter” You just have to check it out for yourself.

On your next trip to Los Angeles you should definitely check out these delicious spots!

Journey to Clear Skin: Before and After

Let me start by saying my Before and After pictures really show you how far I have come.

Accutane also known as Isotretinoin is a capsule that is taken by mouth for abour 5-6 months. It is a form of vitamin A. It reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin, and helps your skin renew itself more quickly. Accutane is used to treat severe nodular acne. It is usually given after other acne medicines or antibiotics have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms.

What Would Derria Wear?: On Her Birthday!

It’s my 28th Birthday and I’m so blessed and thankful for how far I’ve come!

If you asked what I would be doing this year for my 28th birthday back in December I would have probably said that I was going to be out of the country with my friends. But… instead I’m moving across the country by myself with no friends or family. Talk about a leap of faith. This is the second biggest milestone of my life so I am trying to stay positive and not be too nervous about this HUGE move.

So much to prepare for… looking for a new job, buying new furniture and also finding new restaurants to try and new places to explore. New memories to create in the Year of 28. This is my year of INCREASE. Increase in wealth, health, happiness and love.

In the midst of going through this huge move I was able to do more outfit shoots. This look is one of my favorites. The Who What Wear Collection is definitely one of my favorite collections in Target. There are always some really cute items that would be perfect in any woman’s wardrobe so don’t sleep on them.

The bulk of my look is from the new Who What Wear Collection, jacket and skirt. Cute right!? Both were priced under $40. Paired with a grommet cut off band t-shirt and one of my favorite and most comfortable pairs of Steve Madden heels. Check out more outfit details below!

What Would Derria Wear?: Keep it Simple..and Chic

When it comes to What Derria Would Wear… I keep it simple… and Chic!

If you haven’t already noticed I love clothes and when it comes to styling my looks for outfit posts there are times I want to put my edgy style out there but there are also times that I keep it simple yet chic. Its really important to me to have a well rounded wardrobe. So even on my chill days I’m still stylishly chic.

As you may know I am relocating from North Carolina to Los Angeles this month and it has been very tough trying to pack up all my clothes in boxes and also in suitcases. It clear I wont have access to my clothes all at one time so I’m currently going through everything and choosing pieces that I can wear multiple ways until I get everything in the mail. Talk about stressed. I know it wont be too bad though.

Below is a look that can be worn Three different ways.

Look #1: As an oversized dress by itself with my Comme Des Garcon x Converse sneakers. (or any neutral sneaker)

Look #2: Pictured below with the dress and denim skirt layered to provide an edginess.

Look #3: Skirt tied up or draped over the denim skirt. Each look can give different vibes.

What Would Derria Wear?: Dress Up to Dress Down

When you think of Business Casual or Dress clothes, do you think about pinstripes?

I sure do!  But I Dress Up to Dress  down when it comes to my wardrobe. And mixing up your casual and business clothes can be fun and challenging.

A casual band T-shirt with a pinstripe wrap skirt is how I approached this trend. And of course outfits under $50 or $100 are always the goal.

My cut off band T-Shirt is from HM it only ran me about $18. But I always use a 20% off text coupon so it was most likely a little less. The wrap skirt.. $7! What’s crazy is I saw it in another Forever 21 store for Regular price $15 and when I was at another location I found it on the sale rack for half price! Frugal Shopaholic Luck!

Glasses are Buffalo Exchange of course, probably the only place in-store next to Forever 21 that I buy glasses. Surprisingly my bag is from TJ Maxx. For those of you who continue to sleep on TJ Maxx… keep on so I can round up all the cute stuff for my own wardrobe.

Last but not least my heels. They are Cape Robbin brand and I got them from Nordstrom Rack for under $30. You should definitely frequent Nordstrom Rack online. They have some of the best brands for really low prices, I just wish they had free shipping!

What Would Derria Wear?: Spice up your Wardrobe with a Swimsuit

Studded Sunglasses

Have you ever come across a swimsuit that you loved but didn’t want it to just be worn on pool day?

It’s important to be flexible in your wardrobe and keep an open mind. Even the trend of pajamas being worn as casual wear is a pretty dope concept especially with the prints I’ve seen and also mixing with other types of clothing. One thing that I am definitely sold on is wearing a swimsuit as a top or bodysuit within your everyday wardrobe.

There’s been plenty of times that I have come across a really cute swimsuit automatically thought about wearing it as a cute bodysuit instead. Check out my post on Frugal Shopaholics where I talk more about Swimsuit Turing Bodysuits and also so frugal and chic choices for options.

In this outfit post I’m wearing a color bar swimsuit that I absolutely love. I have a Longchamp bag that is the same print so I instantly fell in love with it, and it was under $10! Paired my new found bodysuit with a patent leather skirt from Forever 21 that was only $15. I don’t think anyone can compete with me when it comes to shopping for frugal clothing or anything frugal. My bag is one of three that was purchased from Tj Maxx a few years ago. I got one in Pink, Blue and Black. Such a convenient clutch bag.

Let’s get into these Nike Prestos, they are my favorite sneakers and they make me feel like I’m walking on air, Perfect right? Mint, Yellow, Nude and Black are all the colors I’ve purchased in the last few months. Mostly from Nordstrom online and the Nike Factory Outlet here in Charlotte, NC.

A lot of people sleep on Forever 21 but I have found some of the cutest pieces there that when people ask they don’t believe that I got them from there. My oversized denim jacket is from Forever 21 and it’s really good quality denim. It was only $35! Not too bad.  Check out more outfit details below!

Jersey Sure!- Integrating Athletic Wear in your Wardrobe

I sure could use a vacation on the shore of somebody’s beach, but until then I’ll envision myself in a bikini with my jersey cover-up.

Better yet lets talk about how Athletic wear is making its way into the wardrobes of many. A few years back I was thrift shopping at my local Goodwill and saw a pair of baseball pants and two random football/basketball jerseys. I didn’t know what I would use them for just yet but I forecasted that they would eventually be a trend. I used the pants for a shoot about two years ago that I paired with a crop top and a vintage Letterman jacket.
